my first year at EIC was in '97, my first time ever at
sleep away camp, and the experience i had was so amazing, that i returned
for the following five or so years. i even
persuaded my family (which wasnt hard at all, as they had seen pictures and
heard fantastic stories--wanted to see camp for themselves)to go up for
family camp. after i moved to wisconsin, getting to the island was
quite an ordeal. making arrangements to fly into new jersey, then stay with
a friend for a few nights and then hop on the bus, stay at camp, come back
on the bus, fly home, etc, was a little to hectic, and although my love for
the island was as present as ever, i could not return. i
had been accepted into a youth competitive sailing program here in milwaukee, which
consumed my summers. although i am still very
involved with my sailing team, and have traveled throughout the midwest
with them, i can honestly say that no place compares in beauty to saranac
lake and the adirondack mountains. sailing on
saranac is so private, you feel tucked into and hidden by the mountains
surrounding you. and being on the island feels
like your own personal hideout during the summer, for you and 100 of your
best girlfriends. as the mid winter blues set in
every year, i remember a few years back, when their cure was simply
registering for camp and beginning the countdown. and every year, as summer
draws closer, i remember how i would make my packing list, and buy my
stationary, and just become filled with joy that in less than a month or
so, i would step foot on my home away from home. not
being able to return to the island still kills, so much of me is there. it helped me to grow up, camp teaches you lessons that
cant be learned anywhere else. returning to this
site after over a year is so bittersweet. but
enough of my reminiscing. im done. if anyone remembers me, feel free to email! itd be much appreciated.
