Hello everybody!I must admit, I log on to the guestbook usually every week to see what's happening, but I've only ever actually signed it once, when I first got home. The deep and meaningfuls from everyone else prompted me to do it again so here I am! In response to Eliza's teacher-esque like assignment(!), I was inspired to think about how camp appeared in my everyday life. Unfortunately, I don't have the beautiful scenery round here, or the possibility of accidentally bumping into random camp people, but I will say that I have at least one camp thought every day, whether its from a song on the radio, someone saying something that triggers off a camp song, or just something funny that happened. Thanx to all of you who created these memories.Have gone on for long enough now I think. Hope this finds every one in fantastic form, love KPxxxxxxxxxxxxxx P.S. Hi Jen, how's it going?

Allie, it is definitely the PEOPLE. Of course, the Island is a special and unique place, and that is perhaps what draws us all together. Over the years I have had opportunities to spend time at camp when everyone else is gone, and although it is a beautiful place to be, it is very definitely NOT the same without the people too! Mostly I just walk around remembering different fun times with decades of friends.

I just wanted to show my friend what a great camp we have. I'm trying to get her to work there this summer. I can't stop thinking about camp. We have all these woods around here and deer..lots of deer.and it reminds me of camp. This also would be agood time to intrroduce a future staff member..Erin. She thinks our island is beautiful and would love to join us for a summer of fun. Please send some encouragment her way. thanks!!! Luv ya, Jen and Erin :)P.S. Erin's e-mail is: ranebow433@yahoo.com send her a line that says come and please give reason. I wouldn't normaly ask this on the friends page but i think she'd love our rock (island).

Well now..... reading all these sentimental entries has made me feel like I should write one myself.(or at least attempt to) So here it goes..I think everyone gets hit with that feeling of camp each day. Whether your walking down the street of your town, or sitting in Social Studies class when the topic of abortion and coat hangers comes up(mind you, that really did happen to me). But camp does seem to slip into your mind one way or another, no matter were you are or what you are doing. And it sure makes me happy when it does!Oh Yeah....And to all you inquiring minds out there.....It was ME!!!....And HANNAH!....And STEF!....Mwwwwaaahahahahaha!!!!

hi guys! well I wrote a few days ago but my entry was really short and I was reading all the newer entries and how sweet they were and they reminded how we all have the best bunch of people to go to camp with. So I was inspired to write once again. Well, I also get reminded of camp many times a day. In science we were talking about stars and Vega and Lyra were mentioned! If it's just listening to the radio and hearing a great song(i heard american pie the other day; made my day!)or just hearing the wind blowing, EIC is always in the back of my mind. I couldn't decide if it's the island that's so special or the people. But, I've come to a conclusion(a very true conclusion) that's it's both. The island isn't the same without all the great people and the island is the one thing we all have in common and we all love. And I think that one line for One Last Song-each of us leave a part of our hearts here- really applys to all the people that go to EIC, well for me it does at least. Well, that's all i had to say. I miss all of you a lot!! Love, Allie :)

Well I'm not very good at being deep like all other postings which get me teary eyed but I thought I'd just say something too. I know everyone's said it but no matter where you are camp seems to slid into your heart and thoughts. I mean today I was just walking down the good ole GRHS halls and started to smile like an idiot. (I was thinking of camp)During the school year I get so depressed because I start to lose my memories it is just too long till May, where at least I can smell the island (I'm afraid to open my duff bottle or lake water bottle for the smell of GR to seep in)Untill May however the only way I feel I can truly conect back to EIC is for Camp fun once a month to ACTUALLY happen. Our plans have completly died down. Grrr Untill the next sleep over/Reunion. I miss everyone and everything. "You pull for the shore, boys, Praying to Heaven above, But I'll go down in the angry deep With the ship I love."

Hey everyone. Just sayin Hi! I just noticed today that at least once a day I'm either singing a song or just humming one of mt favorite songs from camp. That goes to show you how much camp leaves behind in not only your heart but also your mind.A lot of everyday things bring back memories of camp back to me.When theirs thunderstorms in the night that seem like a hurricane is gonna blow your whole house or when I'm making a lanyard bracelet in school just like the ones we make at camp. Oh yeah i forgot... Carol Chu told my mom that the staff shirts are going to be ORANGE this year!!!!!!!!!! Can you beleive it... ORANGE staff shirts!!!. Boy am i glad i don't have to wear those yet. But in a way even though she sounded serious when she said it i still think it's just a joke that she wants to get a round...you never know. luv ya ~Danny R.?¿?~*

Oh my, Eliza and Jackie's enteries have made me quite sentimental in the past few days. I completely agree--camp is everywhere. And how lucky we are to have the magic of camp surround us everyday! For me it is the simple things that remind me of my days spent at EIC. Whether it's the chatter of the busy dining hall, the late night talks with great friends, the smell of the trees, the whistle of the wind, the longing to sail on the beautiful lake my dorm overlooks or even merely seeing the good old American flag camp can be seen all over the place! All these things spark wonderful memories of adventures on the Island. It is when I see and feel Eagle Island outside of camp that I truly realize how special EIC really is. It has became a part of my life and what a wonderful addition it has been. I miss you all very much...best wishes for a happy holiday season ahead!

Well girls, we all know that feeling when we 'find' camp in the outside real world; it's that little pang and aching in our hearts that gets us everytime!! for me, it's when i hear buttercup on the radio and suddenly want to form a big circle and do our dance, or when i watch the sun set,(even though the colors are not as beautiful than when seen from the boathouse) or when i sit by the warm fire and remember the times at mariners rock, singing and just knowing that at that moment your the luckiest person alive to be sitting here with some of your closest friends in the world!! or perhaps it's when i'm walking across the feild to catch a train from school and the wind blows through my hair and on my face. OR, when i'm listening/singing/dancin to the Jackson 5 and wishing that i was back in that tent in ADK (penthouse!) or in Arts and Crafts!! (hehehe) we each have our own special moments when we find camp, and i'm sure that we'll keep on having them for the rest of our lives!! "each of us leaves a part of our hearts here..." miss you so much! =)

Wow, Eliza that is an even better question than the book o' questions kind! A sort of stupid answer is that just now (i am in school)when I read a bunch of funny surveys from camp people. I kept trying not to laugh, but I probly embarrassed my self even more b/c then I just looked like a convulsing fool in my rolly chair. Anyway.I can't think very deeply right now, b/c of course this IS school. But just the same I hope everybody had a great Thanksgiving and has lots of things that remind them of good ol' EIC.~NikkiPS- It has been at least 5 days, hasn't it?? Where is that next letter/clue?!

I hope everyone had a wonderful Thanksgiving. I spent the weekend up in Lake Tahoe. There were so many moments when I was reminded of camp: feeling the warmth of the wood stove through my sleeping bag, seeing the sky filled with stars, hearing the mountains turn ordinary sounds into musical echoes (and, of course, eating burned marshmallows off the top of the sweet potatoes). And this got me thinking about the times when I "find" camp in my outside life. It often when happens when I least expect it: laughing with a student, hearing "Glory Days" on the radio, seeing a lake from the top of a peak. So, I was wondering, where do you "find" camp in the outside world? What tastes and smells, sights and sounds, bring you back to the Island, whether you were last there several months or many years ago?

Hey there everyone! I was in the mood to drop a line and say hello. I'm home(NJ) for Thanksgiving and taking a vacation. My very large team (62 men & women, and that's only the novices) is doing great, I even have a rower who went to EIC in 1995. Anyway, I'm having a great time and getting used to living in the South! Have a fantastic day everyone! :)

Ok, I have a sort of weird question, but I need an answer and I figured this would be the quickest way to find out.So, I got a letter in the mail today, with no return address and a postmark from Newark, NJ. On the back it said something like, "I am not a stalker, wait just a bit to find out who I am", and inside was a stick of gum and a birthday card. It's not my birthday, and whoever sent the card wrote inside, "Would you eat a bowl of live crickets for $40, 000". Now, this is a very creepy thing to write in an anonymous letter to someone, but I figure (I hope) that it is just Aidan or someone being stupid and getting back at me for posting a Book o' Questions question on the message board. Now, OttO is telling me that Sara, Arpr, and Aidan have gotten them, too, which is comforting b/c it means that I am not being stalked by a psychopath, but guys, we have a mystery on our hands.... (cue spooky music)

Hello, this passing back and forth thing is pretty catchy eh? Well we just saw a movie which is up with girls kicking BUTT figured it was up in the alley of the girls scout association. THen out to chinese dinner we went. Then with toothpicks in our mouths and hands we rented Friday the 13th number 5. It is a big bummer that no matter were we look we can't find number 4. Now as we sit writting this and reading everyone else's we must comment. Nixon, Nikki, Nicholas-We do believe in evil spirits and ghosts. Never in kathleen's life would she EVER spend a night in a supposedly haunted house and I would have to agree thou it would be cool to see one.Arpr and Dupree-I believe in a few years a special canadian will find ALL of us living in her basement. Eh? Sooory aboot boy(bouy) YEAHHHHHHH!!! Otto can't wait to go to college in Canada (oh soooory "university")That is all. We miss EVERYONE!! and EVERYTHING having to do with camp!!-Otto Hannah Grilled Cheese Grant & Kathleen Hell Captin McMonkey ^| / |/__|_\ YEAH!!!___|__\____/-made by kathleen!!!!!!(that is supposed to be a sailboat...but hey it might not work!!) :(

Okay Nixon...do we believe in ghosts, well, thought must go into this one, but...yes, yes we do believe in ghosts and/or evil spirits. Arpr believes in cutting her hair off to make life easier. Dupree already has. We are at Simon's Rock this weekend, Dupree's college (soon to be Arpr's, we hope), along with Lily, who is out having independent fun. Yay ice cream! We're gonna get some later.... well we love you guys, and Arpr misses the Canadian. In fact, we both do! But we may be moving there soon...243243lk jkglnbOcHfNyOn!m6rl'; r40o

Wandering around the web one day and found an interesting site: http://lcweb2.loc.gov/pp/detrquery.html.This is a search page, and if you enter "Saranac Lake" or "Adirondacks" in the search box, you get a hyperlink page to hundreds of turn of the century (1900-1910ish) pictures of the lake, the Wawbeek, The Inn, the Mountains, the surrounding area, Church Isle. Apparently this Detroit-area business has the entire photo collection from a period photographer. Way cool.

Hey everybody!! I am soooooooooooooo campsick!! I cannot believe how long ago camp seems. I've been back in sunny Scotland for a couple of months now and not a day passes without me longing to be back on 'the Rock'. I went down to stay with KP a couple of weeks ago and it was amazing as we relived the most amazing summer of our lives!!! I still cannot break the habit of bursting into song at every opportunity! Thanks to all who really made my summer... and who knows... we may meet again next year!!!!

Absolutely has to be going out of the lodge (with the lights turned off) humming a song, singing Green Peace, Taps, etc., and hearing the bugle (by Chief Eagle, of course). Every year I wait for that to happen. Sorry to say, Chief Eagle was unavailable this year, but everything before the bugle blowing happened!! (Thanks staff.)

Ari, Not only did I get the video but I hasve watched it twice already. I cried through the first viewing of it. I am going to show it to the ladies at Womens Weekend this coming summer. I am sure the will love seeing the Re-Ded part the most. Thanks for being such a sweetie and taking the time to make it for me. You are awesome. Hello to everyone else out there. Can y'all believe we are already getting in letters of intrest for staff? EIC is well known it seems.

Good Evening, although I am a devoted reader of this site...I am bashful to say this is my first time signing on. I have found a "real" job (working mostly 11pm-7am) after being at camp all summer. Nothing beats being able to surf the web all night long, as a dispatcher....Hey Dreamer!!! Did you get the video, yet?? I sent it in the mail this past week, so enjoy all those wonderful EIC moments captured on video.

Hey yo, whats up. I'm still veryyyyyy campsick. I would do anything to go to eagle island right now but unfortunatley my mom (mommy racioppi, some people know her by that name, only some) won't let me. Even though I am still a camper I'm probobly going back up in May for work weekend or whatever it's called. Even though you have to work it doesn't really matter, at least I'll be on the island. I just can't stand being away from it any longer. All I have to remember the island by is my sister michele(the lifeguard) and pictures, and of course memories, good ones too. Well I gotta go now. I'll hopefully be seeing some of you soon.xoxoxoxoxo~Danny

OK, Dreamer - I can't let that one go by, since the weatherfolk are calling for "snow showers" tonight and tomorrow! Also, the flowers are dead because they have already been frozen a few times (even though they were covered. Usually snow showers aren't very deep, just messy. There is still a riot of colored leaves on the trees, but most will be down after this weekend.

HIya everybody. This is my first chance to get to the guest book to see what is happening in everyone's lives since the summer. It looks like y'all are all as busy as I am. Council is trying to get together the 2001 summer brouchure and need good camp pics. If you have any from last summer that you think are great send them to council but I would not plan on getting them returned so make a copy or send them copy. By the way, thanks for sharing a wonderful summer with me and the other staff members. I am very happy to be a part of such a wonderful place. Hugs and YY's. DreamerP.S. Beth Star.... exactly when does it begin to snow at EIC?? Please do not say "soon." I am still in 90 degree heat down here.

After 5 seasons at EIC I left in tears at age 15. It was a bit of heaven on earth for me. Now 50 years later I am glad to know it is still there. Among my favorite memories: the lapping of the lake against the shore as I lay in my tent, a hike off the island where we made sand castles at our campsite, calling for meals by singing "like birds in the wilderness," eating somemores at our unit campfires, meeting sooo many special girls. At EIC I learned to swim, dive (by being thrown in) and finally to undress without extreme shyness. Do the counselors still confiscate goodies brought from home? and eat them ...? Love you EIC!!!!!!

Wow, reading the guest book has been fun, especially entries from women I remember. Thanks, Mary, for telling me about the web site. Favorite memories: watching stars and Northern Lights from the boat dock, singing "Peace" and "Taps" on the porch of the Lodge, canoeing to and from Chapel Island, mountains, water, singing, and friends. Glad to see/hear EIC is so alive and full!

Thanks, Ellen for confirming my suspicions that that really is the same Hazel Clark. I still can't believe that is crazy little Hazel. She was in Lakeside when I was junior councilor in 88, I think, maybe 87. Her crazy antics made her one of the most memorable campers. Let's hope she brings home a gold for EIC!

Greetings to all my friends, known & unknown, @ Camp Eagle Island. This camp was (is) my favorite place in the world, & some of my BEST memories are from there! Reading other entries brought back so much as I've forgotten a LOT. (Somewhere I have a photo of all the staff the 1st year I was there.) I was only a camper 2 years, but those two years were so memorable because of my stay @ this camp! My favorite song (don't remember the name) went:"I'll shall arise and go unto my Fatherand shall say unto him, 'Father I have sinned againstHeaven & before Thee,And am no more worthy to become They Son'."Is that still sung there (& in harmony)? I remember our unit rewriting the words to "roast" our unit leader, woman named "Chief." I could write so much more... Hope more people from the years I was there (either '71 & '72 or '72 & '73 - can't remember!) find this site!

FYI -- Former EIC camper, Hazel Clark, is competing in this summer's Olympics! Hazel was in the sailing unit sometime between 1987 and 1990 (Eliza would probably know the exact years) and now she is a major track star! She will definitely compete in the 800 Meters and perhaps in the 4x800M relay. Her sister and sister-in-law are also major track stars. Here's more info: http://www.usatf.org/99bios/clarkhaz.htmlSo watch for her and cheer on an old EIC-er!

Well I'm three weeks into my life as a college student and so far it's amazing, but I miss all of you so much! Otto went to work-weekend a while ago and several days later I received a package containing bottles of duff and Upper Saranac lake water. All of my friends looked at me strangely, but really, I was so happy I could have cried so I didn't care. Thank you to all who participated in that endeavor and to all who made this past summer completely amazing, I love you so much!

Hey everyone,I got back to my homeland early this morning and in an effort to keep the memories of camp alive, I thought I'd make an entry. I really just wanted to say a great big huge thankyou to everyone at camp this year for making it so great. The camp counselors advertising slogan read: "The best summer of your life", and I can honestly say that they were right. It really was an amazing summer and I'm so happy that I met each and every one of you, (even if you did laugh at and attempt to imitate my accent..... badly!....you know who you are!). Well that's all really. I'm off to try and recover from my jet lag! Hope everyone has adjusted well back in the real world, and hope to see you all again sometime soon!KPxxxx

Well school has started, hurray! I'm extremely excited, can you tell? I'm sure after I get over the idea that camp, summer, and my free time is long gone, I'll get right back into the groove of things. For now, all I can think about is how I would much rather be at camp, sailing, swimming (yeah i know), and stalking Mike then siting in small classrooms lisening to teacher after teacher give waaay to many hw assignments. Some of my classes are interesting, but of course I would much rather be listening to Eliza, Deb, or Janers teach the water melon pit theory in the old dining hall. Well guys, I think thats it for now. School was already starting to get to me so I thought a connection to EIC (however distant it may be) would help bring me back to sanity. Everyone, please keep in touch... I hope to see you all very soon!

hey guys! well i just got back from work weekend too and i couldn't decide if I wanted to write or not and as I was sitting in my room trying to get myself to actually do my summer math homework, Lean on Me came on the radio so that pushed me to write. well, i had so much fun at Work Weekend. just being at the island away from everything made me very happy. Yea, it was a little sad and wierd having to take everything down and not having tent flaps on the tents and not being able to get into the ADK bathrooms and unit house and not having a dock at the waterfront, but it was still the island. and i got asked a few times by my freinds why would i want to go to work? and all i could answer was because it was camp and this had to get done so everything was in good shape for next summer and because if I ever had the choice to stay home in Montclair or to go to the beautiful Adirondacks, what did they think I would chose? Well, i guess that's it, hugz and kisses!-Allie

Well I just got back from Work Weekend, just seeing the island made me a happy. People say it's the people that make it special when your there but it has to be something in the air. I was even still happy after the smelling the sewage down by the sailing pavilion. It's kind of sad seeing the docks on land at the water front, the tent platforms all alone, the unit house locked away, and taking the boats and moorings up and out, but it helps you during the year to know that the island is there, ready and waiting for another summer.

So I've been told by a certain red-headed Sailing Director that this summer was the best ever. Well, it's good to know you guys all survived the absence of my crew. But fear not, we'll be back with a vengeance in no time. That's my two cents for now.

WoW. It's been a week since camp ended and I'm still talking about it. Meeting Debra, Janie, Eliza, and Arpr, was touching and memorable. Quote from the bus..."You see that girl in that red jacket? Her name is Janie, she's from Canada, and she'll never let you forget it!" Ah....memories of Love, ( Quote erica, "Ya know..that happens when you're at a ALL-GIRL camp!" , Weird dreams...( From Meredith Steck..."It's the number four! Nooo!" and "I want baseballs and hearts!" ), and...food...( "Can bacon disks....FLY?!?" ) The staff was great, ( although we sometimes hit rough edges...*ahem* bathrooms *ahem* ) and I had soo much fun. Let's see....AHA! Last day of camp...free sail...or should I say free swim? LoL. Meredith M. and I had sooo much fun... ( "....I can't capsize it! HELP! MEREDITH!" "You're too weak Justine..." ) Hmm...what else can I say now but...."I CAN'T WAIT UNTIL NEXT YEAR!"

Okay...well I'm gonna see if this works one more time...i tried to write one the other day and it signed me off...ohhh well. I'm having another campsickish moment so i might as well write. Uggg.....today was our first day of school and it's so much more boring than camp...i don't even have any classes w/my good friends. I think I'm kind of getting used to being back now though...not completely, but maybe a little more...okay maybe not, i really don't know. At first what I really missed were all the little things that you get into a habit of doing...simple things like singing grace, spunging tables, meeting at the showerhouse, and stuff like that. Now I'm pretty much over that, but I really miss having all my friends all around me and actually not having any time to myself, which is what i missed a lot at the beginning of camp. I was also looking forward to using my hair straightener...haha, but really it's not that great. For some reason I can't think of anything more to say, basically because I've already complained about it in letters to people already, but have fun whereever you are...and see you next year..ahhhhh.....and write me if you want...i loove getting letters...mail time!!!!

What can I really say? What a wonderful 2 months I just spent at EIC. I could have never imagined before I left for New York that EIC would leave such an impression on me. Most of the people I spent my time with probably don't remember the feeling of falling in love with EIC for the first time, it was so long ago (what 14 years Eliza??). I fell in love within the first week so I can tell you and help you recall when it was when you realized that there is magic that seems to fill the air on the island. The thrill of the wind catching the sail, the look of happiness when someone hikes out for the first time, the feeling of passing on knowledge to another and seeing someone do the same to me, talks until all hours of the night (E and D: Book o' Qs will live forever in my heart), the view from the boathouse porch of the mountains we sailed in front of everyday and the chatter of a full dining hall. These are the things I am going to miss. But above all I am going to miss the people. Those who taught me that venturing to a new country can open so many doors into so many wonderful friendships. So thank you, for everything. It was the best 2 months of my life and I would do it over in a heartbeat. All my love to all my new American friends. WHOA!!! Although I mean every word of that...Deb's deepness defintely rubbed off eh? tee hee. Gotta love it!On a less deep note: thanks for the smiles, laughter, sails and hugs. Never thought I would miss waking the campers up in the morning but that's totally what I miss most (hahaha to Poo and Web!) Hope everyone has a great year. See you all in 2001... and hey! When you think about it: ten months ain't so long....Love, the dang canucki, Janers

Hey Everybody,I just read all your entries and I'm getting all teary eyed. I've been home for 4 days and I'm still going through EIC withdrawal. For all of you who heard my log, you know what camp means to me. For all of you who didn't, I can't say enough how wonderful it is and how much I love everyone there. I had a great time this year. It's so odd not waking up to the sound of that evil crow every morning, seeing all of your faces every day, eating baco-disks and eggs every breakfast. (well, maby I don't miss everything about camp.) I'll see you all next year. Remember: stay on the sunny side of life!

Okay, I've been meaning to write something since I got back from EIC a few days ago, but I just haven't been able to. Everytime I read what someone else posts, I just get choked up, and I know I won't be able to write as well as that. I just miss everybody so much, and all the great memories. I think the saddest part about leaving camp is that it becomes just a memory, and as soon as the bus pulls out of the driveway and you pass the counselors doing their kickline, all of the summers experiences seem so far away; and the bus becomes some strange netherworld between EIC and the 'real world'. I miss waking up to Eliza yelling, "Nixon, get up and rule this country!", talking until late at night for hours in the Unit House, then the Adirondack bathroom, and then in "the jungle". I also miss having trunk parties, writing parodies about the camp food, sailing, capsizing (47 times in 2 hours), Mary Ellening (ripping my shorts AND my bathing suit), debating Canadian politics with Janers, playing the Secret Crush game on Janie, Deborah, Eliza, and KP (and having them play it on you), playing practical jokes, having parties in the Unit House, Reded (uh, what is that torch made of?..), singing the mail song while anxiously waiting to see whether you've gotten any letters or packages, painting paddles ("hiking out to rainbows, sunsets, and stars..."), and the great friends you make. I even miss the trek to and from Adirondack! I miss everyone and please keep in touch!!! ~Nikki

But at the same time, the memories have been at the back of my mind every minute since I stepped foot on the bus. Waking up to lake waters and the allumadock, and "Wake up Nixon, Jackson, and Madison". more love and friendship than you ever thought the Adirondack bathrooms could hold, "Ubelatedeo" in a six part round, sounds of laughter all around you in the dining hall and the endearing creaking sound made by the door, how much comfort there is spending hours inside of Nikki's mosquito netting, just talking about everything and nothing, Jackie Mooney slipping in the boats for the 67millionth time, looking at the lake before a swim lesson, not imagining how it could be so cold if it's so beautiful. However,I think I will always remember sailing the most vividly. The rush you get once your boat is "tied off" the wind in your sails, and the breeze in your face, a sudden puff of wind that sets you flying. Sailing lives inside of me at all times. Its one of those unique passions that you can only experience for a short period of time that just sticks. I think thats why I always start to bawl when people quote "Always remember that you're a sailor, take it wherever you go" "Keep a steady hand on the helm and watch for storms from leeward" EIC as a whole lives inside of you. Maybe its always being outdoors, the freezing cold lake, or the best frienships ever made. The atomosphere is just amazing. Everyone who steps foot on the island is lucky- whether they are a camper or a staff member. So i guess I'll just leave you off with this: (Nikki, this is for you, too) "Hiking out to rainbows sunsets and stars, just finding out who you are". I love you all so much!! Dream of EIC often, "take it wherever you go" and keep in touch. Love, Maddie

It's my first morning off the island, and I got up to go running. After two months of avoiding ditches and rocks on the service road, I was looking forward to both the solitude and the pavement. But I quickly discovered that the pavement's much harder on my knees and that I missed the company of my camper pace-setters who'd lead the way. And that's really a part of the major recurring theme of this summer for me: again and again, you all proved to me what strong and amazing leaders girls can be when given the chance. I watched--with joy and pride--as older girls took on counselor responsibilities and as younger girls rose up to take on leadership roles within the unit and the camp. I saw you develop a community where you had the "strength to lead and faith to follow," and now that you're away from "our island home," I hope you'll work to create communities like this one where ever you are. JackieMooney and the rest of ADK/Isl, it may be another 10 months before you wake up to my shouting, "Good morning, Nixon, wake up and rule this country," but I know that you'll all be waking up each morning ready to lead, whether it be a crew, a class, a country, or the world. May fair winds carry you back to our island home: I miss you all.

Well, I must tell you that as i'm writing this tears are streaming down my face and as i continue writing, i'm sure they will keep coming. I just got home last night and i would give anything in the world to be back there right now. Just the thought of the Island makes me tear up. I miss everything and everyone so much. Having the consulers read Cradle right before bed-(i read a chapter to myself last night) Making late night runs to the Islanders/Adirondack Bathrooms to brush your teeth, seeing purple mountains from the allumadock after a long sail, singing grace before everymeal, waiting on the shower house porch for what you know is going to be a cold shower, feeling the anticipation before crew lists are read, having the feeling of the wind in your face, blowing your hair and hearing it whistle in both ears, rowing back to the dock, holding the sails close to you and thinking about the wonderful sail that you just had, chatting with friends while waiting to go into the dining hall, having 'deep' conversations almost every night until the wee hours of the morning-talking about things you know you can only talk to campfriends about, singing songs that make you want to cry-(It Will Come to You Again, Homeward Bound, One Last Song) hearing logs read on the last day, and waiting for Deb to read hers ,knowing it will make everyone ball. But most of all I miss waking up to Eliza's voice and knowing that beauty and friendship surround you. To Eveyone-I miss you lots already, please write or e-mail or call. Keep a strong hand on the helm, and watch for storms from leeward"...a smile a tear have brought us closer together, each of us leaves a part of our hearts here..." Love Always~ Jackie

Well hello everyone!! The reason I haven't written sooner is because I've been filled with so many emotions every time I try and talk about the island on this page, that I end up at a loss for words. Still now I really don't know what to say to truelly do the island justice. For now all I'm going to say is that its the best place I've ever been to. I just got back from a magnificant trip to Colorado. There, Kathleen and I drove on the highest paved road in America, it actually had an 11 mile stretch in the tundra. Every day we would watch the ranglers on the ranch we were staying at, round up the horses and watch about 70 of them gallop into the next pasture. But, do you guys want to hear something... all the while I was wishing I was at EIC. How pathetic am I? I guess this is my way of sharing with you all how special Eagle Island is to me. I want to say thanks for all the wonderful memories I've had there as a camper, I know I'm going to take them with me where ever I go. I miss you all and I hope to see everyone VERY soon!!! -- It was a wonderful summer!

I recently got back from leaving camp after 6 weeks, may I just say that I have not the slightest idea on how I will manage the school year with out my friends and the feeling I got every morning waking up in the Out-of-doors. It hasn't even been a full day and I'm already bored and disgusted with good ole NJ. I miss everyone and hope they had just as a wonderfull time as I did.

The lodge and dining hall are the most vivid memories. All the wonderful singing around campfires and broadway night, dancing in and out of the windows of the lodge to some old records. Singing songs like "We're a camp" and "Taps" one of my favorits was the song "TODAY" it still bring tears to my eyes, as I remember the buses pulling out of the parking lot on the mainland and waving to all the girls going back home to New Jersey and my sister Diane and I went home by car with my mother. The memories are one the best parts of my childhood. So many of the girls I went to camp with were great,I remember Wendy Dickson and I were in Drifters unit with squirt the white rabbit....LOVED CAMP EIC I live with a picture of the lodge in my livingroom all the time...

second session was so cool. Even though I wasn't in sailing this year, being in wet and wild with my closest EIC friends was great. To Morris the Cat who checks the guestbook "5 times a day"- you were a wonderful counselor! Song contest was awesome- the CITs were so great as well as the sailors (I'm so glad they won), and I hope we brought "Streets of London" back. I love you Eagle Island. Email me anyone :)

Well right now it's Tuesday the 1st and i jsut got back from a month on the island. i never thought i would miss it this much. every time i look at the clock i think of what i would be doing if i was at camp. every time i flush a toilet i wander if I'm going to have to do flushing procedure. when i tried falling asleep i coouldn't becasue i forgot how it felt to not have four of my closest friends to talk into the wee hours of the mornings. I woke up this morning expecting to see my peppy counslors singing to drag us out of the bed.i even miss the stench of the islanders bathrooms! when i went into town today i felt out of place, it feels like i'm on a vacation here and my real home is up on saranac lake. well i miss all of you already, hope to talk to you all soon.

Hey it's only one month away until work weekend! Start planning to join an industrious crew. It's always cooler and less humid than any east coast city. The stars are magnificent at night and we often have campfires. We've even had snow in the air (1986). The usual routine is to work in the morning and early afternoon and then have the rest of the afternoon off to swim, sun, sail, ski, or simply relax in the piney air with spontaneous outbursts of camp songs. On Memorial Day we had people from New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania, Massachusetts, and even Colorado. Former campers and staff are encouraged to return.

Oh, there are so many memories. My childhood is a patchwork of beautiful visions of EIC. I was a camper in Islanders for three years, around 1987. They were important years and I'm grateful that my mom (who also attended EIC) blessed me with month-long stays at camp every year. My Grandmother also attend EIC the very first year.EIC created lasting memories and helped make me the person I am today. I am glad this site is here!My favorite song is a tie between: Moon on the Meadow and On the Loose.I miss seeing the words to the songs writen on window shades (anyone remember that one?)

Wonderful memories..."Lucky" the swimming director, Rocky Pine, Ginny Hilderbrand & Co., the perfume of pine pervading the air...I can still smell it... singing after meals, chip-beef in cream sauce and soft scrambled eggs - yuck! I'll jostle my memory a bit and see if I can come up with some other memories.

So many wonderful memories (aside to Ellen: the Make-Ups will rule forever), and now I look forward to creating more [memories, not make-up] this summer. To both the campers and staff whom I know and the many I have yet to meet, I cannot wait to see you all soon! Also, [PLEASE HELP!] I have a request for Women's Weekenders and/or staff: is there anyone who will be driving up from the NY/NJ metro area around June 23rd who could give me a (one-way) ride to camp? I'm happy to pay for gas and help with driving, and I could meet you at one of the Garden State Pkwy or NYS Thruway reststops that are along the way. If anyone can help me out, PLEASE let me know! Many thanks. PS to Elyse: darling, we *still* use scrap metal as moorings.

hi guys! it's allie. I haven't written for a while and as school winds down and camp comes closer(27 days)i decided it was time to write. well, i can't describe how much i want school just to finish so i can go to camp. i miss everything about it! well, about a week ago i was sitting in school with a friend whenall of a sudden she starting humming a song. I couldn't put my finger on what it was buy i did know it. All of a sudden it came to me-she was singing One Tin Soldier! That whole day was spent humming camp songs and telling friends about wierd experiences. That night i thought of all the memories going from the songs we made up to "falling" out of a boat on a sunny, hot day to sitting on the shower house porch talking while everyone else finishes thier showers to finding our way back to islanders in pure darkness becasue everyone forgot their flashlights. So, i guess i just wanted to say hi and that i miss everyone. And that i hink camp this year will be the best(no matter what uit everyone is in) ~~mwa~~

This morning (at 6:30 after a night of no sleep) I was pasting my pages, and Piney Wood Hills was running through my mind. It got me thinking about those beautiful mountains o' green!! All of these thoughtful entries have re-charged my EIC memories and thoughts so I figured I'd jot a little virtual note down in the "new" Guestbook. It goes without saying that the Island is, and always will be, an essential part of who I am - why I am prone to speaking my mind, why I love to be outside, why camp fire/bug stuff smell is appealing, why s'mores are a gourmet meal, why camp friends are life-long friends. . . So to add to the random memory list - Ozark eating contests, dancing to "Butter Cup" during (!) dinner, last one to the ADK/ISL bathrooms carries the garbage all the way to the Dancing Pig, how it feels to step onto the island for the first time each summer, "Mr. Moon," Human Croquette, Cradle of the Deep, the way the Island smells, Killer Hook-On, blues lips at swim lessons, Dough Boys, treetorns, "And A Man Can Fly," Duck-Duck Goose the Make-Ups vs. the No Make-Ups, 1996 -- the summer it rained every day and we still had fun, sharing a laugh/joke only your unit could understand, the EIC line-dance, making Mimi's quilt, "Moon on the Meadow," long, "deep" talks on the cement dock, practicing docking the LBH, the Stockade, clipboards, yellow sign-up sheets, food recs., pudding cones, playing the "hand-game" between courses, "We are table number 10, number 10, " never, ever wanting to go home . . . Keep EIC alive within, it is a part of all of us.

Well, I just got back from work weekend and feel that I should say something, although I have no idea where to start. It was so much fun, tying down ropes was cool, and reading last summer's sailing logs (and many much older ones) brought back all the details that had fuzzied over the year. I loved just walking the island and thinking back to all the summers I have spent there and the summer I will spend there this year that is just around the corner. Eagle Island and the waters that surround it have changed me, made me who I am today. The best part of the weekend must have been on Sunday night, sitting on Mariner's long after it got dark and cold, singing old songs with Hannah, Louisa, Emily, and Sparky. And so, I've come to the decision that the month of June is way too long to be away for.

A surprise email from my old friend Edie Dixon (EIC Business Manager in the 70's)got me nostalgic for the Island and stumbling upon this site. I started out as a CIT in '72 and worked on and off during the 70's and 80's as counselor, unit leader, camp nurse. I remember so much.. Wilderness, old friends, Walk Shepherdess Walk, lazy days off on the boathouse porch, If I Had Wings, morning milk runs, Blue Skies, change day insanity, The Boatman, snow in July, and a tiny quiet spot along the edge of the Island between Islanders and Wilderness where peace lives. Hello and love to old buddies.

WOW Flash! I'd forgotten alot of those memories! If I can find my dentures and bi-focals(can't be seen in public without either of 'em) I'll see ya next year at Women's Weekend! We venture forth to camp next weekend to start another summer. Sometimes it's cold, often it's damp, and don't get me started about the blackflies. We don't sing alot but do traditional camp graces for meals. The tents have refolded themselves from last year's fall work weekend tangling the ropes and the boats have reshuffled their parts around the service dock. We get to see the island reborn from another long winter and are happy to participate in such a beautiful setting.

Denise seeing your comments brought me out of lurker mode. Attending women's weekend this year is impossible, however Judi Saxe and I have been talking about one year getting as many of us golden (or in my case grey) oldies up there, maybe next year. That would be appropriate. Good to see that you still have a way with words. So many memories so little space. Watermelon pit fights on the staff porch. Raids on trading post and 4 o'clock brownie fixes. Swim tests with ice still in the water. Seaching for white whales at the waterfront. Skylab pieces on the beach. The Breather and the Flying Dutchman. Watching lightning storms from the boathouse porch. SOS and FF. Songs at breakfast. From precamp to staff banquet, Yon Far Beacon to Reded it goes on and on. As always it looks like the sibling rivalry continues between the units. that's the way any family works. Just remember its all about fun. The best summers I had as a camper were when the staff were happy and having a good time. As a staff member they were when our directors let us do the jobs we were hired to do and we all worked together. here's hoping that this summer is full of love and laughter. So have fun and remember Sally McGillicutty lives! and the "Hack Brothers" rule!

Did you really use scrap metal as moorings?? wow! Well, I heard the glory days on the radio so I though I'd write. Thursday night, all I could think of was camp. for all you new Jerseyites, the thunder that hit my area at 5:15 which I think the whole world heard, sounded like camp thunder. Anyone else know what I'm talking about? It didn't grumble like jersey thunder, but it cracked, it was large, loud, and lasted for five seconds! It was incredible, it sounded just like it does at camp. I feel back asleep with the comforting feeling of the safety of a small little platform tent. . .

So, I was thinking of going to women's weekend this year, anyone else planning on attending?Fractured memories: When I (long I) was a camper/staff member (don't roll your eyes), we had to take polar bear showers, walked from Islanders to main camp 10 times a day (uphill both ways), ate government cheese, used scrap metal for moorings, waterskiied behind a rowboat, and sailed in a canoe with a tarp for a sail. All the while smiling. . .and y'all are still smiling from what I can surmise.

hey guys! (again, i know)GO AIDAN AND DEB! As the summer draws nearer, and the temperature is rising, i cant stop thinking about EIC. This weekend, I went on the music trip to Washington DC with our school, and one night we went on a cruise. There were so many sailboats on the bay. All my school friends thought i was insane because i kept on pointing to the sailboats. Sometimes i would say "omg! its coming about! or ooooh! its heeling!" When the sun was setting i decided to stay up on the deck part, looking out over the calm bay. I was trying to imagine that i was on a twilight sail, on a sunfish, having a deep conversation with a friend. I miss camp so much now. See you all in in just a couple of months!! love, Maddie

Deborah...amen...that was just beautiful!! Well guys, since camp is drawing nearer and this will be my last summer (as a camper)I just wanted to tell everyone that I miss them and I can't wait to see you all in the greatest place on earth. I can't exactly pin point what makes it so many people's favorite place to be, so I guess someone just has to experience Eagle Island to truelly know. Maybe it has something to do with the late night thunderstorms, ice cream fights in the dining hall, Eugene's wisdom of Saranac Lake, or all the Backstreet Boys sing alongs. Maybe its because of those pixy stix fights ending in green hair (ahem ahem),those indepth conversations that you can only have with camp friends, hiking out to windward on a windy day, or maybe its just the smell of Pine trees when you first wake up or while you're falling asleep. There are so many special parts of EIC,and I wouldn't ever dream of listing them all. All I know is that Eagle Island gets inside of you, it helps you grow as a person, and you take it with you wherever you go. There, someone can truelly be themselves and not worry about what others think. EIC is the only place that I can actually deal with Rowena singing "Rise and Shine" at the top of her lungs at 7:00 in the morning. I miss you all and I hope to see everyone this upcoming summer!! love you guys

Oh my fellow EIC-lovers~~ I hope you're all enjoying this beautiful weather as much as I am. With summer finally in sight, thoughts of camp are running through my head constantly. I can't stop thinking about those simple camp joys that you never seem to appreciate while you're experiencing them: sharing a flashlight on the walk back to the unit because you forgot yours; sitting on the showerhouse porch, brushing hair and waiting for everyone else to finish; trying to clean the sand out from between your toes after swim lessons; studying all the old staff plaques during meals; picking a wish for the wish log before the last night campfire; searching for the perfect marshmellow-toasting stick; brushing your teeth with tent-mates before bed; singing "The Boatman" on the first night of camp; the chimes before singing Grace; running back to the unit with a buddy to close all the flaps before it rains; listening to rain on the roof of your tent while trying to fall asleep. Oh, I could go on for ages...

The bacon rebellion. We ran out of bacon at breakfast and had a rebellion of guests on our hands. The Harlem Goat, God Bless My Underware, Making Friends are our favorite songs. Mariner's rock, the Boat House, and The Lodge are our favorite places on the Island. Our favorite activity is funyaking and the dances during family camp. Mr. Danno is the BEST!!!!

The magic of Eagle Island is in every rock, root and tree. It is in the lake in which we swim, sail and canoe, and it is also in the mountains beyond. I spent four of my later years as a camper in split time between Sailors and what was then 'Paddles and Packs'. Since then, I have had the amazing opportunity of helping to lead many of these longer hiking and canoeing adventures as a counselor. It brings tears to my eyes to know that these trips have been as important for so many of you as they have been for me. Yet, every year, I see these units as the last ones to fill up, and often running with only three or four campers. (Not that I didn't love those smaller groups -- *big grin* to Sara and Louisa). I need now to pose a question to all of you who might possibly have some imput. How can we share the JOY of these non-sailing alternatives, so that they may become a legacy of their own at EIC? With so much love, and hopes that this summer is everything that it promises to be and more, Timber (Sarah).

Two summers ago I chose to drop out of the sailing unit for one session and I went on a six day hiking trip with my best friend. It was nice to live in a new unit with only three other people, and that trip was one of the best experiences of my life. Yet that experience only made more sure of something that I might not have already known: my heart was on the boats, in the water. For those of you who didn't get in, guys I love you and I will miss you SO MUCH!! Knowing a lot of you, I know you have it in you to have fun no matter where you are. But I can sympathize with the position you are in- sailing might be where your heart is, too, and no one can tell you you're complaining if you didn't get in and you want to know why. There is absolutely nothing wrong with that. There is nothing in the world like sailing- it literally gets in you. And it's a huge disapointment not having the oppurtunity to sail... but I have a boat at home and you guys can come sail with me!!! It'll be hard to see your friends out sailing with your old counselors, I know how hard it is, but it's camp, and camp is fun no matter what. So have a blast, and I'll see you soon! :p

After reading Tucker's post (that practically made me cry thinking about not having my best friend for two whole months! ), I have to note, this summer marks the close of an era. I just want to give a shout out to my crew. You womyn are awesome! Elyse, Tucker, Nora, Sarah, Parms, Emma, Nell, Heidi. The nine of us, we left a mark on EIC. I love you all. Oh campmates! This bickering! What is it? I regret to say that I will not be returning to complete one consecutive decade at EIC. I'm am consoled in that EIC inspired this summer's activity. I'm doing a summer semester on board a 95' wooden schooner, Harvy Gamage, for 2 full months starting an exciting voyage in Bermuda, traveling the east coast to Nova Scotia, and returning to Boston. I cannot wait. EIC started my love of sailing, but it also started my love for spontaneaty and responsibility. I would like to thank all my amazing couselors, directors, Admin, behing the scenes people, and campmates for many wonderful years at EIC. I hope you all have as good as a summer as I've had years past at EIC, and i'm sure you can manage w/o me. Love to all and good luck Dreamer.P.S. I know my first year there were 4 10-day session instead of 3 2-week sessions. Perhaps returning to this would fit more girls onto the island for the summer who get waitlisted. I'm not the expert at this, but just a thought...

It is great to see that Eagle Island is nearly full for the summer despite the problems that have come up as a result. I remember sessions in the late 80s when barely half the camp was full. My first time in paddlers there were only 3 of us and Cricket did everything in her power to get us on our trip. As many of you have stated, the important thing is being at camp. Just be happy that so many people have come to love EIC! Cricket, you may not remember me, but you had a wonderful impact on my life as well, thank you!

first of all, i need to say a few things. i know that there is a bit of hostility between some people concerning this summer. Someone mentioned that these girls who are questioning the changes are only concerning themselves with sailing. I would like to assure them that i am not planning on 'bringing a negative attitude to camp.' i am not really concerned with being in the sailing unit anymore. it's blown up into this big thing, and it's not that big of a deal.i am looking forward to two weeks of total enjoyment and not any negativity. myself, and others(i.e. maddie) were just questioning these new positions and taking a stand for what we think. No one should be critising our view points. they can form their own opinons, but no one should put down others. it's not " girl scout-ish." People are coming up with these theories about what these " complainers" are thinking, but they would be wrong. I am NOT complaining about anything, merely ASKING. And i need everyone to know that i am not going to be " bringing a bad attitude anywhere". i don't think anyone needs to put down others feelings. if you have a different opinion please email me, but don't criticize me. thanks

Hey everyone! Yay Elyse and everyone!! Camp is really special. I was in Waterways for a session last year and i made great friends. I probably had a better time friends-wise second session in Waterways than i did in Sailing third session. I just wish that i could have really given Waterways a chance, and that i could have enjoyed canoing as much as i do sailing. Sara- i totally agree with you. And i ask the same question to myself a lot. why was the rule made in the first place? Does the g.s. council really want to close off people who love camp so much as to come from texas and other places? Why do we want only girl scouts from our area if having girls from other places besides new jersey creates a rich variety of people and lifestyles. I know that it was really interesting spending time with Megan and Sara. (the texans) we learned about how their lives are different than ours, living in the south. I dont understand why girl scouts from other areas should be cut off. They are girl scouts, and we could learn a lot from them. Anyway, I'll try to forget all about this and what I'm unhappy with about EIC. I am so happy because I get to spend four weeks this summer at the most amazing place on earth...Love, Maddie

Yay Kathleen and Elyse! I wholeheartedly agree and can't imagine how anyone, sailors past or present especially, could consider sailing to be the best part of camp. Two summers ago I backpacked through the Adirondacks for six days and those six days have been the best of my life thus far. But I also must mention a point that seems to have been overlooked. No sailor was ever complaining because thier nonexitant sorority has been broken up. Rather, the main point many of us in our letters to Carol Chu have voiced has been in the form of a single question: why was admission changed this year to favor active girl scouts of Essex and Hudson and what was expected to come out of this change? Without a solid answer, many people have come to view this change as negative due to the loss from Eagle Island many who have come to camp for years and grown up loving it, people who don't live in Northern New Jersey and, rather, bring thier own different, distinct "selves" to the Island. It is not because we did not get into the unit of our choice that we are upset, rather, it is the fact that some of our best friends did not get in to camp at all. It must also be kept in mind that Eagle Island is the only place we get to see many of these people all year round, thus it seems unfair to me that girls (myself included) who all live within a twenty minute drive from each other should be favored in admission. Anyone who would like to comment on my opinions, please e-mail me at the address given.

Eagle Island is one of my favorite places on earth. I literally do not know what I would do without it. It's almost a haven on earth from all the stress of life that occurs day in and day out on almost every other day of life. The biggest worry: will it thunderstorm when we have to canoe, or sail, or water-ski, or funyak, or swim. That is the question. That brings me to another point, sailing is not the only fun and exciting and thrilling experience at camp, despite what many sailors believe. It is fun, but so are many other units. I who have been a sailor for six sessions out of my twelve session spent on eagle island camp can attest to the fun of both sailing and other units. I love to sail. It is exhilarating to be out on the water, almost flying through the water. However, what can make you feel better than being able to say, I carried a canoe for a mile and three-quarters over my head. How many people can claim that? If people simply believe that sailing is life at eagle island there may be a decline in other programs, which would be very unfortunate. I have loved every minute of camp that I did not spend in sailing just as I enjoyed those in sailing. You cannot help but love it. Elyse, who was a diehard sailor may be able to attest to this fact most of all. She was a paddler for one of my five-day canoe trips and loved it. I know she had previously only had bad experiences and strongly disliked canoed, but we certainly changed her mind during that session. In the words I once shared with Sara and Nora Nolan: "We're aquateers at heart" ;) I hope you guys remember. I hope that no bad feelings are to be brought onto the island this summer simply because there has been hostility in the air because of one slightly smaller unit. What about the other units at camp? There are others girls who have continually come to eagle island and not for sailing, such as my cousin Meghan who I have shared a CANOEING session with each of the last six years. Please do not bring hostility to camp. Being carefree is part of camp life, even as you stress over how you can carry a canoe so far or a basic sailing test. It will ruin the atmosphere for you and others and be almost like a poisonous seed. Be well my friends and always remember camp and keep it alive in your hearts and minds forever.I love you all and goodnight. KathleenP.S. I want to try to compile a list of who is doing what program this summer so I would be greatly obliged if you are coming this summer to e-mail me and tell me.I am being a CIT second and third session this summer and possibly sailing first. Again, love to all my fellow EICers, past and present.

Yes, I must agree with Elyse. There is life at camp beyond Sailors. But there is also something special, a feeling of tradition that the sailing unit has that is rare in other units. I urge council not to do everything in its power (as it has been trying to in the past few years) to destroy this tradition. Don't turn camp into a political arena with petty disputes and dislikes, and please, never again bash the staff. They work harder than anyone other group I've ever seen and they make camp what it is. I'm sorry, but people who have so little connection with camp that they've only seen it in pictures do not have right to be deciding who is "elitist." Thank you.

You sing the same songs, know the same kids pretty much, and you still have an awesome time. Please, I urge you, fill up the paddlers unit so that there's more than four kids in it. (only child syndrome, sorry)Well, that year was particualarly difficult to deal w/ the fact that I wouldn't be with my closest friends in the entire world. I missed them for those first two weeks and a lot happened while I was on my canoe trip, but Kathleen, Meghan, Astrid, Twig, and Papa Shmurft proved to be great companions. hey guys! it's been a while, i know i know, please don't scold me. well, i hear that there's been controversy over kids that didn't get into sailors. well, let me tell you a quick story and i hope it will lighten your mind. As a little one in aquatics, i was a sailor wannabe. I'm not ashamed to admit it at all. Over the course of the 12 weeks I spent at camp in two years, I went on at least 3 canoe trips. Sorry Ellen, but i think I pretty much hated most of the canoeing part of them. I was too weak to make the canoe go anywhere (probably still am). Finally

unfortunately, part of my message got cut off, i'm trying again. Finally, I graduated and made it to sailors and I was grateful to never have to look at a canoe ever again, or so I thought. In 1998, I nudged and nudged my mom to sign me up for camp for fear that it would fill up. Well, it did. I was on the waiting list for sailors second and first session but I was in for third for sure. Well, I knew I wanted to go to third, but I didn't think I could handle canoeing for a month. Well, I got into sailors second session and rather than stay home, I signed up for paddlers first session. Wel

To the adults at Council, I would just like to make the observation that the majority of love and support on this webpage comes from past/present sailors. Take a look at your stats and note the sailors' return rate opposed to other units. So to all my fellow sailor soeurs, you rock and you always will. As for all the non-sailors, camp would never be the same without you. You keep us sailors in line and remind that this camp is special for everyone. Campers and staff of 99, although I was not there, I give you my support.

::waving to Sarah's father::::::: Great post Sarah. Thanks for sharing. I am so excited, I just got a tape in the mail from Timber with several EIC camp songs on it. They are great and I will have so much fun looking like a complete fool driving down the highways of Louisiana learning each and everyone of them. Approximately 79 more wake-ups for campers and 68 for most staff. Oh yeah, I was clued into the fact the EIC does not have crickets on it so you will have to come up with some other soothing pictures in your brains to help lull you to sleep. How about lying in a sailboat and watching the clouds drift by? How about standing on the porch of the lodge humming Taps in Friendship Circle?YY's, Dreamer

hey everyone! i would like to say that i was reading the posts and thinking about camp and stuff, and my dad was standing behind me reading the posts and stuff. he was astonished at the support that this web page gets each week. the comment he made was that he couldn't believe how many people write about camp and read this like everyday. I told him that there were so many people that have fallen in love with the whole experience that they couldn't help but come to this page just to feel closer to camp. i think he understands how important camp is now. I just wanted to say how important camp is to everyone, no matter what unit they are in, or what their job is. Everyone( even if they have never been there) loves the camp, and they only want to have fun! I can't wait until this summer!! love, sarah

Maddie, I know how you feel about the anxiety of getting through school and waiting for camp to come. It seems like it will never get here. I am once again excited about standing on the shore of Camp Eagle Island because of post like yours and Jackie's. They are wonderfully positive and welcoming to new comers like myself. Thank you for making me feel part of the EIC family. I am quite sure I will fall in love with the Island as have so many of the people that were there before me.I figured a count down of sorts may help with things so here it goes. CAMPERS: There are 81 more wake-ups till those bags will be loaded onto the boats bringing you to PARADISE!!!! Staff: There are 73 more wake-ups until we will meet. Sleep well and dream of good things, like...... ummmmm woodsmoke and the sounds of crickets serenading you to sleep.

Hi everyone!!!! Its maddie again, remember? I just wanted to say that i am really looking forward to coming to camp even though it seems far away now. The only way i survive (not literally) the monotonous school year is thinking that once its over, ill be able to spend 4-6 weeks at probably the most amazing place on earth. I have the best times in my life there: sailing with the wind whistling in my ears, singing pretty campfire songs in the unit house with the fire crackling, going to the little temple seeing the nice old people every friday (w/ deb leading the service!) swimming the the freezing cold lake during a twilight swim, and swim lessons (even), the rush of finally getting up on one ski after ive tried over and over, not having to worry about what i look like. just being myself, enjoying how utterly beautiful EIC is!!!!! and if i say anymore ill probably cry. Im really sorry that some of the returning counselors and campers can't come back this year. ill miss all of you!For Dreamer-I am really looking forward to meeting you and i hope after this summer you will love camp as much as we do! i miss everyone so much and im so looking forward to seeing everyone again! love, Maddie

Hey guys-just wanted to say hi again. Lately I've been longing for EIC more then usual, it all seems so far away....being on a sailboat with the wind in my face, on Mariners Rock when the sun starts to set and turns the sky radient colors of red and purple, sitting on the tent steps staring up at the millions of stars, in the lodge singing Catch the Wind, Piney Wood Hills and even the Duck Song, sitting up late at night while everyone else is asleep to have heart to heart talks with your most treasured friends... these are just a few of the many.... Just wanted to share a little something that happened to me the other day...I was walking down the hall to biology class, and suddenly I hear one of the girls in my class singing a song I know and I can hardly believe my ears, this is what I heard, "So kiss me and smile for me, tell me that you'll wait for me, hold me like you'll never let me go! I'm leavin on a jet plane..." well let me tell you!! I stopped dead in my tracks-suddenly memories of song contest and camp start to rush back to me-(this is all going on during bio class mind you!) And from that moment on I have had the tune stuck in my head! But I don't mind because with every note I hum I'm thinking of camp and of all the friends I've made and all of perhaps the best times in my life! Just wanted to say to Rowena-I'm truly sorry that you wont be returning-camp will not be the same without you!! To Susan- I'm very sorry that you ever felt that way about EIC. To all of my fellow campers and the staff- I miss you more than ever and will always love you!! Can't wait till summer! ~Jackie =0)

As excited as I am about going back to my fifth and final year as a sailor, and my eighth as a camper, I can't help but feel that some of the negative comments in this guestbook I'm reading, about the unit I've come to identify with, are a preminition of an ugly year to come. Please, please, please... let's draw the clear line between politics and camp before we set foot on the island, and preserve it the way it is... it's perfect, and we all are in agreement on that. As for the "sorotites" and "selfish adults" that are spoken of, I have absolutely no idea what you could possibly be talking about, but if you wish to own up to either of those remarks, feel free to do so... I've posted my honest-to-God screenname for you.

Eagle Island is so much fun! I'll be going for my 6th year (I think) this year. Unfortunetly, I was not able to get into sailing this year (quite a dissapointment), neither was my cousin Philly, and many other veteran sailors. I'm sure camp will still be as fun as always, and if it's not, well, never mind, I dont think it is. I cant wait until camp! I miss you guys!

Come to your life like a WARRIOR, nothing will BORE YA, you can be hapPY....I always feel that second bit is sketchy. As hard as I try I just cannot make 'ya' (let alone 'you') rhyme with warrior. Nonetheless, today is a great day, not only becaue this is my first time doing a guestbook but because after reading everyone's messages I feel so much closer to my (our) beloved island. AND this is going to be a great year, no, century for Eagle Island I just know it. This is despite the difficulties posed by my not being able to attend this year. I know, I know it is going to be terribly difficult to carry on but you'll have to manage.....(I AM, i hasten to insert, being a touch ironic here.)The main thing that I have missed this winter is rousing 25 overtired adolescent girls before 7:30am after spending a wild evening in the Ad Building, as they are wont to be, the night before. Perhaps that is in fact second to describing and running a quality control on flushing procedure technique for new campers. Well, whatever we miss during the winter or in fact during the unfortuate portion of our lives we do not spend there (our metaphorical winter, perhaps) we are privalaged to know people with the shared passion. Or privalaged to know the people that are the passion.'Land of the silver birch, home of the beaver; blue lake and rocky shore, I will return once more.'Love from Rowena PS 1999 CAMPERS and staff, you are awesome.

Susan Schultz, I would greatly appreciate an e-mail address where I could mail you a short letter explaining the reasoning behind the positions of myself and my friends, which I am afraid you have terribly misconstrued. My sister Ellen (Tredder) and I first hit the dock in 1966. It changed our lives. We, (along with our younger sister Maureen [Squirt], who joined us as a camper in 1970?)spent some wonderful years having fun and causing trouble. I think all of us who have loved the place have left a piece of our souls on EIC. Like the song says: "Oh, island of my desire, in memory you'll live for me. You'll shine like a beacon fire, in the far off Western sea."

When I start thinking of all that I did at Eagle Island it is hard to come up with a favorite. I remember being a Tripper & porting our canoes. I also was a Mariner and remember Skipper and living in the boathouse. I loved camp so much. I often wish that I had settled on the East Coast so that my daughters' could have gone there too!

Hello all,I have been a silent observer of the EIC guestbook from a time before I could even lay claim to an "official" connection with the island. I can no longer stay silent. Eagle Island is an incredible place both in terms of the site as well as of the spirit of Eagle Island. I have seen that spirit in the *generosity* of nearly everyone who shared their love of the Island with me, even before I ever set foot on it. When I did finally visit, the beauty of the place was stunning. However nothing could compare to the incredible experience I had last summer as the Assistant Camp Director under Mimi Harrington. I write now in response to an entry from a stranger who has used the term "selfish" to refer to the adults who work themselves ragged every summer to make the Island a sacred place for girls. I cannot sit silent and allow assumptions to be made about the phenomenal people who have created a special place in so many girls' hearts for that physical and spiritual place we all call Eagle Island. Camp staff are some of the most selfLESS people in the world--they are part of why we all continue to return to Girl Scout camping year after year. If there are issues among the participants of this guestbook about how camp is run and whose priorities are being honored now or in the past, please take it up with council, where they clearly seem to think they know what's best. But PLEASE do not insult the camp staff by implying that they have done anything less than put the girls first and work themselves tirelessly doing so. If you don't realize this, you don't know EIC (or GS camping) well enough to comment. Thank you to the staff of '99 for the work you did to make it an unforgettable summer.Yours truly,Becki

Hi everyone! In case you don't know me, I was a camper for six years, a CIT for one, and a counselor last summer. I am not going to go into too much detail about what camp means to me because I will start crying (that's how much I miss it). I miss every single tree, rock, tent, pine needle, and grain of sand on the island. I miss each and every one of you, whether you are a friend I have made at Camp, or a friend I have yet to meet. I must say that one of the things I miss most about camp is the sailboats. Never in my life have I experienced anything more liberating, challenging, inspiring, and beautiful than when I have sailed at Camp Eagle Island. I will never stop being grateful for the opportunity I have had to learn how to sail at Camp, and the opportunity to, after many summers of improving, finally reach a level of confidence in my own sailing. I hope that each and every camper has as magical (as Deborah would say) an experience as I have had in my eight summers at camp (especially last summer!). Although I miss camp dearly, and I miss all of you more than I can begin to express, I will not be able to come back to camp this summer. However, I will be thinking of how lucky all of you campers are to be able to salute the flag on the tree each morning, take a buddy to the green johns, sail on a windy day, or go on a counselor hunt. Have a wonderful summer! Love Jackie

I've been reading the posting on here for quite awhile. I'm really shocked to read about who should have priority. EIC is not a sorority for the sailors, its a very special camp. When I was a camper, we were all so excited to be at camp, to be with our friends that it didn't matter what program we were in. Sailing was a big program even then but we were not treated special. I hope that the camp administrators continue to make EIC equal for all. EIC is for everyone and claiming ownership to a particular program or living unit is not girl scouting. I may have only been there a few years but EIC has always been in my heart. Carol and Traci.... keep up the good work to bring EIC back to what it was meant to be. It looks like the camp is for the girls again instead of selfish adults. HIP HIP HORRAY! YOU GO GIRLS!

Hey everyone! i would like to first of all, say thank you to maddie for saying how important you think we(the texans) are to EIC. I really appreciate it. I would also like to say that i feel that the girls who are already girl scouts(regardless if they are in the camp's council) should be allowed into camp before those who aren't already girl scouts. Megan Beesley and I (*plus a very few other girls in our unit) last year were already girl scouts. i don't think it's fair to allow people who are not already girl scouts in before those who are. EIC is a girl scout camp, and so i think it should allow true "girl scouts" in before those who aren't. i would also like to say that since the camp staff feels that the same girls would fill the sessions before those who have never been, and not allow those girls a chance to go. I would like to add that the girls from out of council provide a "melting pot" atmosphere. I am from Texas and i know that almost everyone else at camp is from New Jersey, it's a good experience to meet girls from different states.Don't think that i am not greatful for even having the opportunity to return to camp this year. i am thrilled. I would just like you to consider these points for future years. Please take this into consideration. thank you, sarah

Another quick update for EIC. All programs for older girls session 2 are closed. We have limited space in Junior Jamboree, Waterbugs, and CIT 1. We have limited space in Session 1 and 3 as well. Also, we have received several calls requesting the names, addresses, phone numbers, email addresses, etc. of girls registered for a particular program. Our office can not release this information as it is confidential information. It is for the protection of every child in camp. Thank you!

This message is for Carol ChuDear Ms. Chu, I have been a camper at EIC for the past 6 years, and i have been a sailor for the past 3 years. On behalf of all of the sailors, I think you should allow for 25 spaces in the the sailing unit. The Sailing unit has always been one of the largest and the most popular programs. Many girls who have been sailors for years are cut off completely now. Two girls fly up every summer from Texas just to be in the Sailing unit. Even though their forms were sent in promptly, they were told this year that the program was full and they couldn't get in. Please find a way to take my ideas into consideration. Otherwise, the sailing unit, overall, will be lessened. Sincerely, Maddie Liebman

Hello Everyone, I have been reading the postings on this page for a month or so now and I have been impressed by the sense of family and beloning that is generated by Camp Eagle Island's people. That is one of the things that helped me make up my mind to accept the Camp Director's positon for the summer. I would like to say thank you to the people that have welcomed me thus far. I have heard from several people through my email and I have even had the pleasure of talking to a few staff members on the phone and online. I am not good at introductions but I guess one is in order so here goes..... My real name is Traci Soileau (pronounced Swallow). I was born and raised here in the Deep South. I have been involved with Girl Scouting for 27 years (no need to whip out your calculators, *laughing* I am 35) and have been working at Girl Scout Camps for 18 years. I started as a Horseback riding instructor and have worked in many areas including waterfront, Arts and Crafts ACD/Program and Camp Nurse (YIKES).I began to travel around the United States working at different camps over the last 10 years and have found one thing to be true. Girl Scout Camps are the best. What drew me to EIC??? I think it is the sense of family as I said before and the incredible tradition that seems to flourish in this magical place. I cannot wait to experience and learn about EIC and I cannot wait to meet you all. Please feel free to catch my online and chat if you are on AOL (i42Dreamer) or drop me an email (i42Dreamer@AOl.com). YY's (this is an ancient symbol for frindship) Dreamer

I am truly excited to have Traci at camp and I hope that everyone will welcome her warmly. We still have a positions available so if you are interested in working at EIC this summer be sure to contact Traci at i42Dreamer@aol.com or the council web site camp@gscgehc.org.

ok, i admit it...i still where my monkey's fist from time to time (it's good luck for exams), i sing camps songs in the shower and, should the topic of moose ever come up in conversation, i brag that i have been in the presence of adam, the second largest moose head in north america. oh man, do i miss camp. the best summers of my life were spent on dear ol' eagle isle and i know that i will always pine for it. it's amazing to me to see names up on this message board that i actually recognize...hope that everyone is doing well. drop me an e-mail sometime.

This is a much belated thanks for all the positive comments people left about last summer. In five summers as a director I've never felt so appreciated or supported by the campers and staff. I will miss you all very much this summer. Remember that you are part of a long line of people who have been changed by Eagle Island. I may be part of the past, but I hope that many of you who were campers will return as staff and pass on your experiences to the next generation of Eagle Islanders. One of my counselors once told me that, and I obviously took her seriously. Kathleen, Sarah, Aidan, Hannah, Sara, Maddie, the CIT's of "99, Deborah, Sarah G., Maureen, and everyone who has been signing this guestbook - YOU are the Future of EIC. Each of us leaves a part of ourself there, but we also take away much more. My longtime camp friends, and the new friends I made each summer at the Island, are always with me. No one can take THAT away from me. You people, and Eagle Island are always in my thoughts. I hope to hear from you and about you for a long time.

Hi everybody! I am so looking forward to coming back to EIC this summer. I know that whatever the circumstances may be, ill still have an amazing time. Camp is so special, and i've made so many great friends the past 6 years that i've been a camper. I have had so many great experiences-sailing, swimming, waterskiing, singing pretty campfires songs, toasting marshmallows, sleeping under the stars at bugle rock, etc. Especially sailing! :-) I hope to see everyone this summer. In the meantime, this website is awesome, and EVERYONE should sign the guestbook!

Hey guys! I can go back this year to paradise! You probably don't know me because I've only been going one session a year but this'll be my fifth year going. It is sooooo worth it to travel from Texas every year, even though I get nautious every time I drive over the mountains. But hey- what a view while I barf! Whenever I think of happiness and friendship, I think of EIC and sailing, singing, and reading Cradle. I can't wait to make new friends and memories this year, and maybe even name some more sunfishes (yay Neversink)! See you there! I LOVE EAGLE ISLAND!!

I was talking to Maureen earlier this week, wishing that more people would sign the guestbook, when I realized that I haven't actually signed it since about this time last year! February seems to be the time when camp seems the farthest away, and images of the lake, friends, and Adirondack MUD seem foremost in my mind! Though I have not actually recieved one myself, I hear that the camp brochures are out for Summer '00!!! Well, the pictures may be black and white, but in my mind, last summer is still full of vivid colors! I miss you all so much. Oh, and a very special Thank You to everyone who came to my concerts in NYC, West Hartford, and Boston! It was wonderful to see you all, and I look forward to seeing more of you again this summer!

Just got on the web and thought I'd check out the site! Nice work, Cindy! I still keep in touch with people at the work weekends and in-between. My years as staff and director at EIC were some of the best of my life! I'm pleased to see Barbara Day's generous donation. Her parents were wonderful friends of Eagle Island for many years! At the Tri-State Camping Conference in NY City last year I saw 2 former campers who are now professionals in the camping industry and they commented on the impact that EIC had had on their lives....I was sitting in the bookstore behind the counter when a young woman said "You don't know who I am do you"? After looking at her nametag...I knew EIC. She actually said that I had impacted her life...how cool. HI to everyone who was at EIC when I was. Take care.

I was sitting here late Friday night, bombarded by work, mulling over the fact grad school does not allow an iota of free time. One of my fellow-frustrated classmates initiated a conversation that asked for the ultimate retirement place. It's a no-brainer. So, of course I had to search the web for pictures of my favorite place in the world. Have they fixed the ping-pong table at the Lodge? My Dad and I used to have epic battles on that table lasting entire afternoons. And by the way, I hope everybody enjoys the chairs on the Lodge porch! My mother spent an entire year finding the ones she liked the best. She donated four to EI. Some places are just timeless, wondrous, and safe. Keep the water blue and the campfires stories ready. Someday I'll be back.

None of them will get it, but I thought I'd tell the people who would laugh. Now everybody, laugh! Hi Cindy. You rock. I'm really psyched that I can see this page and have the opportunity to bug everybody all at once. Yay!! The 2000 Women's Weekend flyer was sent out to everyone who attended last year. If you did not receive either the brochure or flyer by February 7, please call Sarah in the Montclair office, 888-746-8200 or 973-746-8200. She will be sure to get it out to you. After a painfully long search, I finally found this page via Skipper's page. This page did not come up on a regular search or the ACA homepage search. Know what? I have spent most of this past decade at EIC. 4/5 to be exact. Although Shakespeare kept me from camp this summer, I've been hearing nonstop about what a great time everyone had and how cool Mimi was as a director. Wish I could have been there.Oh, and I opt for the new land to be graced with the Nolan name. Happy New Year! 'Tis all.

Actually, a young eagle is an eaglet (it doesn't end with -te). I think those who have spent time developing warm relations with EIC's neighbors over the years (especially Pete Benson, Laurel Spina, Cricket Snearing, and Mimi Harrington) deserve a lot of credit for the Day family's impulse to give this wonderful and generous gift. May it turn out to be a truly useful addition to camp program and the girls' experience in the summer.

Thanks for the clarification Jan! A story to share! While on vacation this summer, I was sharing with my family at a family reunion about this island camp that sits in the middle of a huge lake in NY. As the conversation went on, my sister and older female cousins were convinced this camp that i talked about over barbaques chicken and corn was the same camp my grandmother took us to. So we found the pics and there we are...at EIC! I was between 5 & 7. I can't believe it! I'm an Eagle Islander. As I am a 3rd generation GS.... I now know why my camp in Michigan sang and still sings the same songs that EIC sings and sang back then. I was really beside myself this summer as i heard all those songs and knew them ALL. The #1 question from my family was IS THE BIG MOOSE HEAD STILL IN THAT BIG ROOM OVER THE FIRE PLACE? WOW! History does repeat itself!

I love scanning the guestbook on a regular basis, and renewing for myself how much Eagle Island means to all the campers and staff we have had over the years. Two thoughts from the council executive director - one, a clarification. Our new property is not an island, it's a wedge-shaped piece of the mainland, with waterfront access, and we expect to use it next summer, as Carol has indicated, for picnics and overnights. It's a delightful new outpost for our camp!Secondly, as we are in the midst of the holiday season, you, as I do, probably get daily requests for contributions to many needy causes. I'd like to add an on-line pitch for Eagle Island! There are many opportunities for you to help us, but perhaps the most meaningful might be to help another child go to camp next year! Your gift to the Girl Scout Council of Greater Essex and Hudson Counties can be designated for our campership fund, and will be used to underwrite one or more girls attendance at Eagle Island. What better way to pay tribute to the wonderful experience you had, than to help another child benefit from that same experience? Please help us to help more girls benefit from this wonderful camp.

this is the first time I've been to the guestbook and what a treat it is. (thanks maureen!) It's so great to hear from people who love the island so much. I'm always amazed at how Eagle Island is able to attract such a dynamic, caring, and wonderful group of people. The thing about EIC that is so wonderful for me is the amazing sense of continuity and tradition - like just thinking about all the people who have sung 'On the Loose' and 'Catch the Wind' at camp fires, and all the people who have sat at Mariner's Rock gazing at the same mountains and trees, all the people who have stayed up late with friends in the tents, and all the people who have sung Green Trees, Peace, and Taps after an allcamp. To all the people I worked with this past summer, was a camper with in previous summers, and of course my dear campers from '99 - know that you are in my thoughts as always. "We will keep on going through shadows and sunshine... You're searching for your someday and I am searching for mine."

I've just been spending some time looking through and organizing my camp pictures from this summer and i was remembering what an incredible time i had this summer, so i thought i'd share it, again. i was a cit and it was awesome. we went on the best canoe trip, shadowed the best counslers, hung out with the best campers, and made the best friends. timber and ari were so cool, they taught us so much, as did all of the other counslers. camp really felt perfect after a couple of years of feeling not so perfect. it was camp at its best, and i know that everyone who's reading this knows

WE HAVE A "NEW FAMILY MEMBER" AT EIC!! I'm please to announce that we have received a very generous donation from Barbara Day, a former camper from the 50's, of another ISLAND. The island is located very close to Chapel Island and is in an excellent location for a picnic/day trip, or perhaps even an overnight. The island (which has yet to be named) is about 1 1/2 acres of land and quite cozy. We are so excited about receiving this wonderful gift from Ms. Day and the opportunities it will brings to the camp program. Its gifts like this that keep Eagle Island alive.

I may have moved half way around the workd and acquired a different accent, but I still feel the same way about camp. Ellen has just been staying here and we have come to the conclusion that Eagle Island made us into better people, and that camp friendships last much more than a summer.

Hi all!The EIC program for next year has been developed and well received. We hope to have it on here for everyone to see soon. Technical difficulties have prevented us from getting the 2000 camp brochure to the printer as soon as I had hope to. The 2000 brochure will be in your homes by mid January. We have some really exciting new programs that were developed from your evaluations this summer. Thank you for your input! We will be sending a brochure to everyone who attended camp last summer as well as our current members. If you did not attend camp last summer and would like a brochure mailed to you, be sure to email us and we'll make sure you receive one. Have a great holiday season!Yours in Girl Scouting!Carol ChuOutdoor Program ManagerGSCGEHC, NJ

After experiencing two incredible weeks at camp this summer, more recently spending time with wonderful camp friends, and then receiving the sweetest present anyone has ever given me (Maureen sent me some of the best parts of camp: S'mores, music, and a tillie present!), I am reminded again of what makes Eagle Island such a special place: the lasting friendships that are formed on the island influence, affect, and better my life like no others. "Until we meet again, in nature's majesty…" thank you, my friends. (PS new email address: eross@pobox.com; AOL IM remains "kelizascop").

I thought others would enjoy this message i received a few days ago. It's the reason why we're here!
Carol

Eagle Island
has been one of my dearest memories for over half-a-century, even though I was a camper there for only two summers, (1940-41). On many occasions something would trigger a spontaneous flash back - be it a tune, a smell or the sound of the wind in the trees. On a trip this summer returning from Quebec to our home in California, we drove through the Adirondacks, into the busy, crowded village of Saranac Lake on the slim hope of discovering some information about my long remembered camp. I had no idea how to find it. Obviously it wasn't around the town of Saranac Lake. But where was it? When we stopped for some service at a garage, I asked if anyone knew of an island camp on Saranac Lake (Upper? Lower? I couldn't remember!) Blank faces answered me. We were about to drive away when a young man approached and said he had overheard my question and he knew about the island. Yes, it is still called "Eagle Island"; yes, it is still a camp; yes, still a Girl Scout camp and not only that, he knew just how to get there!! Thirty miles later I was standing on the dock looking toward "my" island! Imagine my joy when, I actually found the Eagle Island trefoil sign(somewhat faded) and the boat dock where the launch took a group of ten-year old giggly, giddy girls out to that magical camp! So many memories flooded back to me at that moment: the smoky campfires, the pines, the "some mores" and did I hear the evening singing? I wonder if the girls still sing one of my favorites:

Peace, I ask of thee O River, Peace, Peace, Peace
When I learn to live serenely, cares will cease.
From the hills I gather courage, visions of the days to be
Strength to live and strength to follow, all are given unto thee.
Peace, I ask of thee O River, Peace, Peace, Peace.

Finding this website is a perfect complement to my rediscovery of Eagle Island this summer.

Sincerely,
Allene (Sibby Muhlbach) Henry

Hi everyone! I are presently in the process of writing the 2000 summer brochure and I'm interesting in finding out (from the campers and former staff) what type of programs you would like to see for next year. Sailing, canoeing, backpacking, etc.? Cheerleading? a music session? Do we need more one week seasons or less? Is there a program that was offered in the past that you would like to see offered again? All successions will be considered so please post your thoughts! Hope everyone is well!

Hi everyone! I can't believe that it's taken me this long (almost two 2 months now!) to finally get around to signing this illustrious new guestbook - how sad! Anyway, I just wanted to take a moment to share with everyone my thoughts on Eagle Island - there are so many! 8 years ago, I first came to an island that was to become my inevitable second home. I met people that became my best friends, and others, that would influence the person I grew up to be. Through the years, I've truly developed an incerdible love for the island and all it has to offer. As I look back on my experiences at Eagle Island, I now realize that my summers had never been as perfect as I had always percieved them to be. In every case though, it was a special "love" for Eagle Island - one that many seem to share - that kept us all together. My summer as a CIT this year, was definately the best ever! 9 super friends in such a great place...what's not to love about that? I just wanted to thank all of the incredible staff - especially Timber, Ari, and Mimi. They were the best "counselors" (in every sense of the word) I could have ever asked for. And so, in response to Mimi's summer question "What makes Eagle Island so special?" I can only say that it's the close friends, the amazing staff, good songs, and great times. The rest, is up to everyone to find out herself.

I was just married on Chapel Island, something I was able to do as a result of the many great summers I spent at EIC. This website has helped me get back in touch with alot of good friends I had lost contact with over the years, Thanks!!

Thank-You!This summer was my daughter, Bonnie’s, last summer as a camper. She had been attending EIC each summer for the past 8 years (with the exception of 1996). As I sat on the beach during the last campfire of third session, I think I cried as much as she. I remembered my last campfire when I was “too old” to return. Little did I know that I’d be going back as a Woman’s Weekender, Bus Chaperone, and Driver. On our ride home, I asked her how she felt now that she would not be returning as a camper. She said that she was sad, of course, but that her past two weeks were the best time she had ever had and that she had put closure to a part of her childhood. When she said that, I thought of the re-dedication ceremony and the speech given by the spirit of childhood. Those of us who go back year after year, try to find the peace we enjoyed and the friendships we made as children and adults. As Chief Eagle concludes his speech, “Let children always come here,” I hope girls will always be on Eagle Island, no matter how “old” we are!To all those who have played a part in her years as a camper—the Council, Camp Directors (Mimi, Amy, Ro), Counselors (Cara, Ellen, Eliza, etc.), staff, chaperones, etc. I would like to say thank you for your time, energy and devotion. Camp has made a definite impact on Bonnie. Her memories will be with her the rest of her life. In her years at camp, she has made hundreds of new acquaintances, has developed new friendships, and acquired many skills. During her camp experience, she learned to water ski, sail, canoe, backpack, hike, kyack, swim, etc., etc. Where else can a girl learn so much and have fun doing it?It won’t be long until she comes to Women’s Weekend with me! Who knows, maybe she’ll even send a daughter to EIC one day!Again, thank you all for giving my daughter a world of experiences and a lifetime of memories.Sincerely,Jane Park

Hi everybody! Just found this website and wanted to say that it's realy cool. Had a great time working at camp this year. Both the staff and the campers were awesome. Mimi you did a great job! My favorite memory from this year had to be running from the waterfront office to main camp during a thunderstorm (waterfront staff, you know what I mean! hehehehe!) To everybody that I said I'd write to, sorry. I got really busy with school. I'll try to write soon. hope everybody had a great summer and that the school/work year has started out right. Don't forget to keep EIC in your heart throughout the year and get ready for next summer!

Hey Everyone! This is the first time I've been to this site (thanx for the address, Kathleen) and it's so cool. I love reading guestbook entries from all my camp friends and looking at the pictures. '99 was my 6th year at camp and the best so far. It's amazing to me how close you can get to someone just by being at camp with them for 2 weeks. After 5 days canoeing and hours sailing with people, I feel like they know me better than the friends I see in school every day. Thanx to Mimi and Becki for making camp this year so wonderful. And to all my fellow Paddlers and Sailors, I can't wait to see you next year!

I am pleasantly surprised EIC has a website. I never would have known if Beth Benson had not told me. I see a lot of old friends listed. I was first a camper and then a staff member from 89 - 92. I was just up there for work weekend with Scooter (Peter Frees). The camp looks great!! Pete has really made a lot of improvements. I was sad to leave. Good luck to all of you and I hope to hear from some of those old friends. I have really missed them over the years.

The island is so pretty! I love it, in the evening, when the sun is setting, to sit on Mariner's Rock. It's so beautiful. I also loved going to Temple on Friday evening's. We would get there early, and go play on the swings for a while. The people there are so nice.

Once you come to the Island you can't leave it. It is in your bones and written in and on your heart forever. This was my sixth year at camp and included my sixth sessions for both sailing and a canoeing unit. I can't help, but say it was all wonderful. I do regret not being able to be a CIT (you guys are an awesome group and I love you all), but I know I would have missed out on meeting a lot of the wonderful people that I did if I had as well... I can't think of a time when there were better counselors or more wonderful ones returning from when they were past staff or campers. Everyone adds something to camp, but the director and assistant director do more then anything. Mimi and Becki thank you so much for an absolutely wonderful six weeks of my life. It will not be forgotten anytime soon. I love you all so much! I hope to see many of you again next year assuming I'm there as well. To the CIT's: You were great...I'm sorry I missed out on it! To the Sailors: I can't help but love you like sisters. I may have wanted to be a CIT at times, but I don't know if I could have traded meeting some of you to be one! To the Paddlers: We spent 4 nights and 5 days together canoeing and portaging ;) I couldn't have asked for a better 8 (including counselors) to share it with!

okay, my last "essay" got cut off, so now i'll just finish what i was saying. this summer was very different than what i experienced last year. camp was back to being the best place on earth. the whole camp was like one giant family. everyone cared about eachother, it was great. and the whole "family" was held together incredibly by mommy mimi. she was so great to all of us. she knew everyone at camp and everything about camp. her and becki made such a great team. they did so much for the camp in so many ways. thanks to them we had really cool activities, we had really great counsl

Well ladies, another great summer just passed us by. For a while, i believed my most memorable year and quite possibly my favorite year, was 1995. But as those memories blur and get a little fuzzy, this year comes in loud and clear. I don't think i will ever forget this amazing summer at EIC. So many smiling old familiar faces returned to camp and there were billions of new ones too - all smiling and laughing and enjoying themselves. Mimi was as awesome as i remembered her being, 9 years ago. I believe she was part of the reason I kept coming back. Becki was wonderful too. And the rest of staff.. wow.. i don't remember ever having as cool staff as this year. They accepted the CITs and helped us through hard times and laughed and cried with us too. A big time thanks to everyone for making this the most awesome summer and a wicked last year as a camper. Thanks!

This summer was the best i've ever experienced at EIC. I had such a great time being a CIT and I hope that everyone has that experience. Timber and Ari were incredible counslers. They taught us so much about being great counslers and about how to deal with different kids and stuff. They have not done so alone, however. All of the other counslers who we shadowed were great too. We all had such a hard time choosing which counslers to go with, because they were all so amazing. They all cared so much about camp and everyone who was there. It was very different then what I experienced

I like Trinidad a lot because there is where I grew up, although I was born in America. Hey everyone!! Well, I returned from my 5th summer at EIC about 2 weeks ago (TEAR), and it was probably my favorite summer yet. I can't quite pin point it, but there is something so special about EIC and I'm truelly thankful that I get to be apart of that. I want to thank Mimi and the rest of the staff for making this such an amazing summer and returning EIC back to EIC. I love you all and i hope to see everyone soon. P.S. Hi Everybody, I just want to say that EIC is the best camp you will ever go to. I have been to other camps and they cannot compare. I just left after second session and I miss camp sooo much. I can't wait intil next year when (hopefully) I will stay for 6 weeks. I have some of my best memories from eagle island and I will never forget it.
